Funke Akindele Opens Up About Tyler Perry’s Influence On Her Journey To Becoming A Top Filmmaker
Award-winning Nollywood actress, producer and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared her inspiring journey in the Nigerian film industry, revealing that she taught herself the art of filmmaking by watching movies and studying the works of renowned Hollywood filmmaker Tyler Perry.
In a recent interview with BellaNaija, the box office record holder spoke about her humble beginnings, describing herself as a young and inexperienced storyteller who was determined to produce meaningful and entertaining films despite lacking any formal training in film production.
“I never went to film school to learn directing, screenwriting or production,” Akindele said. Instead, she taught herself the skills, by watching movie sets and gaining practical experience in the Yoruba movie industry.
Reflecting on her early career, particularly during the production of the popular Jenifa series, the actress said she was only interested in presenting real stories that the audience could relate to.
“I was young, inexperienced and self-taught when it came to film production,” she said, adding that passion and determination were what kept her going despite the challenges she faced.
The award-winning director said Tyler Perry has had a huge influence on her creative style. “Watching his films and TV shows helped me learn about storytelling, script writing and film production techniques,” she said. “I didn’t go to school to learn about film. I just watched movies. I actually learned how to write from watching Tyler Perry movies and shows. That’s my idol. I just love him so much. ” I look forward to working with him and meeting him,” she said.

Akindele said her continued success stems from her willingness to continue to learn and evolve with the changing landscape of entertainment. “I never rest on my laurels, I always push myself to improve,” she said.
One of the reasons why she has been able to stay in Nollywood for long she said is her ability to reinvent herself and she encouraged other aspiring creatives not to become complacent.
The actress also pointed out the value of team work, humility and collaboration in her career. Instead of thinking she knows everything about the filmmaking process, she collaborates with other professionals to improve the quality of her productions. “I continually work with professionals in the film industry. I don’t think I know everything. That’s helped me through the years. “I’m not perfect,” she said.
Fans and aspiring filmmakers have connected with Akindele’s story. Many have admired her dedication, resilience and commitment to lifelong learning. Her journey from a self-taught actress to being one of the most successful filmmakers in Nollywood still inspires a new generation of creatives across Africa.
