Uzor Arukwe Opens Up on Why Marriage Can Be More Tasking for Women
Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has said marriage should not be considered the defining achievement in a woman’s life, arguing that societal expectations surrounding matrimony and motherhood are gradually changing.
Arukwe expressed his position during a conversation on the In My Opinion podcast, in a clip shared on Instagram.
The actor explained that marriage often comes with considerable responsibilities for women, particularly because of pregnancy, childbirth and social expectations such as taking their husbands’ surnames.
He said these demands were among the reasons he had never been a strong advocate of marriage.
“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen,” Arukwe said.

He maintained that society was increasingly beginning to understand that a woman could lead a fulfilling and meaningful life regardless of her marital status.
“So, I feel society is now beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman,” he added.
Reflecting on the pressure women previously faced, Arukwe recalled how being unmarried at 25 or 30 often attracted criticism and questions from relatives and members of society.
He noted that older generations frequently compared younger women with their own experiences, pointing out that they had already married and raised children by similar ages.
According to the actor, such expectations are gradually losing their influence as more women make independent decisions about marriage and parenthood.
He also revealed that he had met two or three women who had no desire to have children.
Arukwe’s remarks contribute to ongoing discussions about changing family structures, gender roles and the importance of allowing women to determine their own life paths without being judged by traditional expectations.
