I Can’t Date Younger Men – 62-Year-Old Mo Abudu Opens Up About Her Romantic Preferences
Veteran Nigerian filmmaker and media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has declared that romantic heartbreak is unlikely to make her cry at 62, explaining that her attention is now focused more on her work and personal goals than on relationship disappointments.
Abudu made the remarks during an interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, where she discussed her attitude towards dating, the standards she expects from a potential partner and why she prefers men around her age or older.
The media entrepreneur said her perspective on romantic relationships had changed with age. While acknowledging that heartbreak could have affected her when she was younger, she maintained that she no longer considers a romantic partner capable of easily disrupting her emotional stability.
“I even cried recently. Heartbreak. Heartbreak. Nobody can break my heart. It’s not possible. Heartbreak. There’s no such thing as heartbreak at my age,” she said.
She explained that the challenges associated with her professional responsibilities were more likely to bring her to tears than a disagreement or disappointment involving a man.
“If I cry, it’s not because of man. It may be because of my work. A man cannot make me cry. Okay, surely maybe when I was younger. I mean, we’ve all been there,” Abudu added.
When asked whether she would accept an invitation for a date, the filmmaker said she would first consider the person making the approach. According to her, reaching the stage of dating requires more than simply expressing romantic interest.

At 62, she said, she has clear standards and goals, and anyone seeking a relationship with her must demonstrate that he can meet her expectations.
“Right, I’m 62 years old, right, and I have set certain standards and goals for myself. So if you can meet my standards and my expectations, maybe you can take me out, maybe you can’t,” she stated.
Abudu also highlighted financial independence as a major factor influencing her choices. She said she can provide for herself and her family, meaning she does not need a man to take on that responsibility.
Her position, she explained, is not to invite someone into her life who would create additional pressure or become financially or otherwise burdensome.
“The thing is that I don’t want anyone in my life that’s going to be a burden on me,” she said.
The filmmaker further disclosed that she would rather date someone her age or slightly older, citing her traditional views about relationships.
She added that respect matters greatly to her and that she expects a potential partner to have achieved something meaningful by his stage in life.
Her comments highlight her preference for a relationship built on independence, shared values, achievement and mutual respect.
