Ghanaian movie star Majid Michel has described comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood as unfair, arguing that the population gap between the two countries makes the comparison unreasonable.

The veteran actor expressed his views during an interview with Y1079 FM Accra, where he explained that Nigeria’s much larger population provides a wider pool of people who can become actors, directors, producers and other entertainment professionals.

Michel said it was only logical for Nigeria to have more filmmakers than Ghana because the West African country has several times Ghana’s population.

He likened the situation to comparing two groups of different sizes, arguing that the larger group would naturally have a higher chance of producing more people in various professions.

“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me,” he stated.

The actor said Ghana has fewer than 40 million people, while Nigeria’s population exceeds 200 million and is sometimes estimated to be approaching 300 million.

He questioned why anyone would expect Ghana to produce the same number of professionals as Nigeria without considering the significant population difference.

Michel also argued that the issue was not limited to filmmaking. He said the same reasoning applied to other professions, including medicine, where a larger population could translate into more practitioners.

Beyond entertainment, the actor discussed Ghana’s development and leadership, warning against measuring the country against nations that have had centuries to establish institutions and governance systems.

He maintained that some countries had built strong structures over hundreds of years, while Ghana was still developing its own systems.

According to Michel, comparisons should take historical circumstances, population and institutional development into account rather than focus solely on outcomes.

His comments have drawn attention to the longstanding conversation about the relative size and influence of Ghana’s film industry compared with Nigeria’s Nollywood.
