Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has justified his recent switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), likening the move to a man pursuing an elephant who ignores the distractions of barking dogs along the way.

Speaking in Uyo on Wednesday following his return from the United Nations Ocean Conference in France, the governor explained that the defection was made in the best interest of Akwa Ibom residents. He emphasized that the decision was a strategic step to better position the state for accelerated development.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dismissed backlash over his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly criticism from individuals he referred to as non-indigenes meddling in local affairs.

Defending his move, Governor Eno emphasized that his choice was both constitutional and strategic. “I’ve simply exercised my right to freedom of association,” he said. “Let’s stay focused—when you’re chasing an elephant, you don’t stop for barking dogs.”

Reasserting his role and vision as the state’s leader, Eno said: “Akwa Ibom’s direction is my responsibility. I’m in the driver’s seat. I know the smooth roads, and I’ve chosen a fast lane for development.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to steering the state toward peace, unity, and sustained growth, guided by faith and a sense of divine mandate.

Also speaking at the event, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, APC’s state chairman, commended the governor’s leadership and called on citizens to rise above political noise and support Eno’s mission to bring federal opportunities to the state.

“Governor Eno is the leader Akwa Ibom needs right now,” Ntukekpo stated. “Let’s focus on results, not distractions, and rally behind him to deliver the dividends of democracy.”
