AAU Lecturer Dies in Edo Hotel After Alleged Encounter With 21-Year-Old Woman
A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
Uwuigbe was said to have lodged at the hotel with a woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob. According to the police, the lecturer allegedly engaged Jacob’s services before later asking her to leave the room to purchase water.
Police said that when Jacob returned to the hotel room, she found Uwuigbe lying lifeless on the bed.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police at about 8pm on Sunday, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said three persons had been arrested in connection with the case.
Ikoedem said the individuals in custody were the hotel owner, the manager and Jacob.
“On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” she said.

According to the police spokesperson, Uwuigbe sent the woman out to purchase water, but she discovered him dead when she returned.
Ikoedem said investigations were ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
She added that Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, AAU’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the university’s staff.
However, he stressed that the incident occurred away from the university campus and was unrelated to the institution’s activities.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika said.
He also clarified that the woman involved was not an AAU student, noting that the incident occurred outside the university premises.
Police investigations are expected to determine the cause of death and whether any criminal offence was committed.
