Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Rangers International, began its title defence by fighting back to secure 1-1 draw against Katsina United, at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Playing at their temporary home ground in Abeokuta, Rangers were stunned when Luis Dadong clipped the ball over Lucky Jimoh who mistimed his clearance allowing the Katsina United forward to score into an empty net on 38 minutes.
Azeez Audu Mohammed’s men defended their one-goal lead for longer spells.
However, a harmless freekick by Rangers right-back Chibueze Oputa embarrassed Katsina United’s Gambian goalkeeper Francis Koroma in the final moments of the match. The goal saved the champions from suffering an opening day defeat.
