NOC to Host Good Governance Seminar for Sports Federation Presidents
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Solidarity programme, will organise a two-day Good Governance Seminar for presidents of National Sports Federations.
The seminar, scheduled for September 28 and 29, 2026, is aimed at strengthening the leadership and governance capacity of sports federation presidents in Nigeria.
According to the NOC, the programme is designed as a capacity-building and knowledge-sharing initiative to promote internationally recognised standards of good governance within Nigerian sports.
Key areas to be addressed at the seminar include sports architecture, leadership principles and qualities, core governance principles, responses to governance challenges, and the roles and responsibilities of federation presidents and secretary-generals.
Participants will also examine effective management of National Sports Federations, as well as ways of identifying and addressing various forms and areas of corruption in sports.
The initiative is anchored on the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance within the Olympic Movement, which emphasise clear vision and strategy, sound organisational structures and regulations, integrity, ethics, transparency, accountability and effective control mechanisms.

NOC Secretary-General, Babatunde Popoola, said the seminar would provide federation presidents with an opportunity to share experiences, examine current governance challenges confronting Nigerian sports and develop practical approaches to improving administration and service delivery.
To ensure effective delivery and coordination of the programme, the IOC has appointed Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport and a MEMOS instructor in Governance and Sports Management, as the international facilitator.
Development Of Sports Administration
The NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of sports administrators through continuous education, workshops and training programmes.
Gumel said the initiative was part of the NOC’s broader mission to support the sustainable development of sports administration in Nigeria.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, is expected to officially declare the seminar open.
The NOC said the seminar would further reinforce the responsibility of National Sports Federations, as affiliates of the Olympic body, to operate in line with their constitutions, applicable regulations and recognised ethical standards.
