“They Took N8m Out of N10m” — Mr 2Kay Speaks on Burna Boy Assault Compensation

Singer Abiye Jumbo, better known as Mr 2Kay, has explained why he parted ways with his former record label, revealing that the company gave him just N2 million from the N10 million compensation paid to him by Eko Hotel and Suites after a 2017 robbery incident.

Mr 2Kay made the disclosure during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, where he recounted the circumstances surrounding the attack and his subsequent disagreement with his record label.

The singer said the hotel management paid him N10 million following the incident, but his former label gave him only N2 million from the amount.

According to him, the handling of the compensation money contributed to his decision to leave the label.

The attack occurred on October 22, 2017, after the singer performed at the Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless concert at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

He was reportedly assaulted, tied up and robbed at gunpoint in his hotel room by men who allegedly posed as room service personnel.

The incident attracted widespread attention after police arrested four suspects, including Joel Kantiok, Burna Boy’s road manager.

Burna Boy was subsequently declared wanted by the police before turning himself in. He was arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in December 2017 on two counts relating to conspiracy and accessory to armed robbery and was granted bail.

During the investigation, the suspects reportedly told police they had been hired to attack Mr 2Kay. The allegations became the subject of legal proceedings.

Mr 2Kay later withdrew the case after Burna Boy tendered an apology.

The dispute between the musicians appeared to have ended in August 2021 when a viral video showed them socialising at a Lagos nightclub.

Reflecting on his career, Mr 2Kay disclosed that he has since become a music executive and believes the business side of the industry offers significant financial opportunities.

His latest revelation has brought renewed attention to the financial disagreement with his former label and the events surrounding the 2017 attack.
