Bayelsa Deputy Governor Urges Women to Lead Social Change, Build Stronger Communities

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Peter Akpe, has called on women across the country to take a leading role in promoting social change and building a more responsible society.

Akpe made the call on Wednesday when members of the Diri/Akpe Women Support Group from Bayelsa West Senatorial District paid a solidarity visit to him at the Government House in Yenagoa.

The deputy governor praised the contribution of women to nation-building, noting that their influence at the family and community levels could help address major challenges facing the country, including insecurity, crime and declining social values.

He urged women to become agents of positive transformation by promoting discipline, contentment and responsible behaviour among younger generations.

Akpe stressed the importance of value reorientation, saying societies that uphold strong values and standards are more likely to achieve sustainable development.

“As women and mothers, we appreciate the role you play in society. You birth today for tomorrow. And so, we all need to be agents of social engineering,” Akpe said.

He also advised the women’s group not to make political expectations the foundation of their activities, but instead focus on building lasting relationships, supporting one another and developing their capacities.

The deputy governor warned against taking impulsive decisions in politics, saying patience and strong networks are important for achieving long-term success.

“If you want to have a long-lasting team, then don’t build it totally on political grounds and high expectations. That will not take us far. But build it on the foundation of relationships,” he added.

Akpe, who received the delegation alongside his wife, Favour Akpe, described the formation of the group as meaningful and encouraged members to continue supporting their leaders while expanding their reach beyond politics.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its leader, Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown, pledged their support for the administration of Governor Douye Diri and assured that the group would continue working with other stakeholders to achieve its objectives.

Ndiomu-Brown, who represents Sagbama Constituency III in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, also expressed the group’s commitment to supporting the political direction of the state.

The delegation included government officials, community leaders and former commissioners, among others.
