Amusan, Ajayi, Onwuzurike Named In Nigeria’s Squad For World Athletics Ultimate Championship

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named a squad of established stars and emerging talents to represent the country at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, holding in Budapest, Hungary, from 11 to 13 September. NigeriaNews Subscription

AFN Media Committee Chairman Maxwell Kumoye announced the list, confirming that world record holder Tobi Amusan will lead the women’s contingent, competing in the 100m hurdles and the mixed 4x100m relay.

Kanyinsola Ajayi carries Nigeria’s hopes in the men’s 100m, while Udodi Onwuzurike is entered for the men’s 200m and the mixed 4x100m relay. Ella Onojuwvevwo competes in the women’s 400m, and Ezekiel Nathaniel takes on the men’s 400m hurdles.

Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m relay team comprises Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Miracle Ezechukwu, Onwuzurike, Rosemary Nwankwo and Amusan.The AFN said Ajayi, Ashe, Amusan, Nathaniel and Onwuzurike were among athletes who had already established themselves at major international competitions and were expected to draw attention in Budapest.

The event, organised by World Athletics, is a new season-closing invitational running in even-numbered years between World Athletics Championships, with a US$10 million prize purse and US$150,000 for each gold medallist.
