Lawmakers Resume Legislative Activities Following Annual Recess
The Nigerian National Assembly has resumed plenary today, Tuesday, September 29, following its annual recess.
The Senate and House of Representatives are returning to legislative business after an extension of the recess, which was initially scheduled to end earlier this month.
Lawmakers are expected to focus on pending legislative business, including constitutional amendments, electoral reforms and oversight of the implementation of the 2026 national budget.

The constitutional amendment process is also expected to remain a major issue following the transmission of proposed amendments to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration.
The proposed reforms cover issues including state police, local government administration, electoral matters and other institutional reforms.
The resumption comes as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with lawmakers expected to consider outstanding electoral reforms and other measures affecting the electoral process.
The leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives is expected to outline legislative priorities as plenary gets underway.
Lawmakers are also expected to face questions on the implementation of the 2026 budget, constituency projects and other matters of national interest.
The National Assembly had earlier extended its recess to allow the completion of rehabilitation work in the legislative chambers.
