Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charly Boy has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s playful remarks about him during the London presentation of Obasanjo’s memoir, 999.

Obasanjo was seen in videos circulating online teasing Charly Boy with several descriptions, including “thief,” “barawo,” “drug addict” and “ashawo.”

The remarks generated reactions on social media, prompting Charly Boy to explain his understanding of the exchange.

In a post on his X account on Friday, Charly Boy said people should not interpret Obasanjo’s use of the word “ashawo” literally.

He explained that the former president was familiar with him and that the remarks formed part of the relationship they share.

Charly Boy said he had spent much of his life receiving unusual labels because of the way he chose to live and express himself publicly.

He recalled being described as a rebel, mad man, jaga-jaga boy and other names before joking that Obasanjo had now added “ashawo” to his list of descriptions.

The entertainer said he was more interested in the broader relationship between himself and the former president than the individual word used during the event.

He pointed out that Obasanjo had also spoken about qualities he respected in him, especially his relationship with his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, and his mother.

According to Charly Boy, the fact that Obasanjo felt comfortable enough to tease him publicly demonstrated a level of familiarity between them.

He nevertheless rejected the specific description, saying he did not agree with the “ashawo” label.

Charly Boy maintained that he was not offended by the exchange and appeared to treat the remarks humorously.

The entertainer’s response has since attracted attention online as Nigerians discuss the unusual interaction between the former president and the outspoken entertainer.

He ended his message by acknowledging Obasanjo’s comments while making it clear that he disagreed with that particular description.
