Caleb Flynn, a former contestant on American Idol, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn.

The 40-year-old was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole after jurors rejected his account that an unknown intruder had entered his Ohio home and killed Ashley as she slept.

Flynn was also convicted on eight other charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence.

The prosecution alleged that Flynn staged the family home to make it appear that a stranger had entered through the garage. He had told authorities that he was asleep when he heard gunshots before discovering his wife’s body in their bedroom.

Ashley, 37, was a teacher. Her two daughters with Flynn, aged nine and 11, were in the house at the time of the killing and were asleep.

The emotional impact of the case was evident during Flynn’s sentencing hearing when letters from his daughters were read aloud.

One of the girls addressed her father with disbelief and anger, asking how he could have killed her mother.

“Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing?” she wrote.

She described her mother as “the perfect person” and said Flynn had killed the only mother she had ever known.

The other daughter deliberately addressed him as “Dear Caleb” rather than “Dad”. She asked him to tell the truth about what happened and accept the consequences.

“You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you,” she said in the letter.

She also stated that her faith in God remained strong but that she would never visit Flynn in prison.

Flynn broke down and sobbed as his daughters’ letters were read in court.

During his own statement, Flynn said he loved his family and apologised for decisions he had made. He acknowledged that he had failed in his marriage vows but continued to insist that he was not responsible for Ashley’s death.

“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed those vows,” Flynn said.

Judge Jeannine Pratt nevertheless described him as an “extreme” danger to the public before imposing the sentence.

Investigators presented extensive evidence during the trial, including police body-camera recordings and information extracted from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch.

The prosecution argued that the digital evidence contradicted aspects of Flynn’s account of events, particularly his claim that he was asleep when Ashley was killed.

Dozens of witnesses testified for the prosecution. Among them was Botner, whom Flynn had met when she was an intern at his church.

The court heard details from around 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner. One message allegedly showed Flynn saying he had spent the night crying and thinking about how he could kill Ashley without being sent to prison.

Another message reportedly stated that he wanted Ashley “dead and gone.”

Flynn did not take the witness stand during the trial, and his defence team did not call any witnesses.

His lawyer, Patrick Mulligan, has announced plans to appeal. He argued that prosecutors had not established sufficient evidence of prior calculation and design.

Mulligan also maintained that allegations of infidelity did not amount to evidence of murder and questioned the tampering charge because investigators never recovered Flynn’s gun.

After the verdict, prosecutor Paul Watkins read a statement from Ashley’s family describing her as a devoted Christian and loving mother.

“Ashley loved Jesus with her whole heart,” the statement said. “She loved people. Most of all, she loved being a mum.”

Flynn had previously appeared briefly on American Idol in 2013, where he spoke about his marriage and said he loved Ashley “more than anything.”
