Freddie Jackson, the celebrated American R&B singer whose smooth vocals produced some of the genre’s most memorable romantic songs, has died at 69.

The singer was widely known for hits including “You Are My Lady,” “Rock Me Tonight” and “Tasty Love.” His family confirmed his death in a statement but did not reveal his cause of death.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night,” the family said.

Jackson was remembered by his relatives as a generous and compassionate man whose life revolved around his family, friends, music and fans.

His career spanned several decades, during which he became particularly recognised for romantic R&B and soul ballads that resonated strongly with adult contemporary listeners.

Among his best-known recordings were “Rock Me Tonight,” “You Are My Lady,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “He’ll Never Love You (Like I Do)” and “Do Me Again.”

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York, on October 2, 1956, the singer entered the professional music scene in the late 1970s.

He initially performed with California funk group Mystic Merlin before eventually launching his solo career.

Jackson’s major breakthrough arrived in 1985 when he released Rock Me Tonight. The album became a major success, with both its title song and “You Are My Lady” becoming popular R&B hits.

The album earned platinum certification, and Jackson maintained his momentum with Just Like the First Time, another platinum-selling album.

Although his greatest commercial success came during the 1980s, Jackson remained committed to music throughout his life.

He continued releasing new material, including Love Signals in 2018 and My First Love in 2023. He also remained active on the live music circuit, with performances reported as recently as September 2026.

Jackson had disclosed in 2024 that he was dealing with kidney disease. His family, however, did not state whether the illness contributed to his death.

Tributes from fans are expected to follow the announcement as admirers remember the singer’s contribution to R&B and soul music.

His family expressed appreciation to everyone who supported him throughout his long career.

“To everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage: thank you,” the statement said.

The family added that Jackson considered his fans part of his extended family and carried their affection with him throughout his life.

They asked the public to keep his relatives, friends and loved ones in their prayers while funeral arrangements are being made.

The family said further details about the funeral and celebrations of his legacy would be announced later.

“Rest in peace, Freddie. Your legacy and your voice will live on forever,” the family said.
