Nigerian music star Spyro has spoken candidly about a difficult period in his childhood, revealing how his relationship with his father affected his confidence and perception of himself.

The singer made the disclosure during an interview with Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni, where he discussed some of the experiences that shaped him while growing up.

Spyro described his father as a pastor and alleged that he was often accused of stealing whenever money went missing in church.

According to him, the accusations were sometimes made publicly, leaving him embarrassed in front of other people. He said the situation became more painful when his father later discovered that he was not responsible for the missing money.

“My dad is a pastor. He will tell outsiders that this boy is a thief. Once money misses in church, he will point to me,” he said.

The singer also recalled an incident at school involving a cleaner who he said scratched his head with her long nails.

Spyro said he reported the incident to his father but was allegedly accused of lying. He claimed that he was subsequently punished and flogged.

The singer said the punishment left a physical mark on his back which, according to him, remained for 22 years.

“My dad flogged me and left a mark that’s still on my back 22 years later. It broke me because I told this man the truth and I suffered for it,” he recalled.

Spyro said the repeated experiences had a lasting emotional effect on him. He explained that he began to feel that if his father already viewed him as a bad child, there was little reason to behave differently.

He said his mother played an important role in helping him cope with the situation, describing her love and support as a balancing force during his childhood.

The singer’s revelation offers insight into personal experiences that he says influenced his understanding of himself and his relationships while growing up.
